Give your Bunny a Good Home

Are you about ready to bring your very own brand new bunny home with you and the bunny needs a bunny home? You should learn what kinds of rabbit cages are available in order to choose just the right one for you and your new bunny. There are various types of cages and they all need to be clean in order to take the best care possible of your new bunny.

You will need to consider the size of your new cage. Generally, the bigger the cage the better it is for the bunny. When you have a smaller breed of rabbit, you need a cage that is about 24 x 36 inches. When you have a larger breed of rabbit, one that weights 8 pounds or more, you need a cage that is about 30 x 36 inches. However, when you need more space, consider getting a two-story cage.

Cage design is essential. Since you can train just about any rabbit for the litter pan, a solid floor is possible to use. Keep in mind that wire floors do cause chafing to the feet and hock of your rabbit, making them tender and sore. If a wire cage is your only option, you should place a piece of flat wood or a grass mat inside the cage to protect your bunny.

The size of the door should be large enough for you to get the rabbit out easily. It should also give you easy access to the litter pan and the litter pan should lift out entirely. A side door will let you get larger rabbits out easier, though for speed, a cage that opens at the side and along the bottom might be ideal. Make sure that the edges of the door are smooth and without raw wire.

When it comes to bedding down a rabbit, there are many options available to you. Sisal mats are great for offering a cozy location. You can add carpets, towels, a fleece blanket or fabric scraps to add extra comfort to the cage. Since evergreen aromatic oil are harmful to the liver and lungs of a rabbit, do not use cedar or pine shavings. Rather you should use straw or hay, since it is healthier for the bunny.

When you want to make sure that your rabbit stays healthy, remember that regular cage cleaning is a necessity. Start by removing any cloth or loose bedding, and then take out the food bowl and the water bottle. You can then spray the cage with a mixture of hot water and vinegar, which will not be harsh on your rabbit when you put it back in. Pay special attention to the area where the litter box is.

After the hutch has dried completely, line with a few layers of newspapers, putting a few extra layers in the area with the litter tray. For extra absorbency, add a layer of kitty litter. Though some rabbits love to make a mess with it, others do just fine. Find out how well your rabbit takes to it.

Now it is time to put in the bedding material, whether you use straw, shredded newspaper or scraps of fabric. Some people use shredded newspaper in the open area and straw in the enclosed shelter area. After this is done, all you need to do is to refill the water bottle and the food dish and to put them back in.

When you want a bunny home that will keep your bunny happy and healthy, this is all you really need to know to choose an ideal cage for your rabbit and keep it nice and clean!

I disagree with this:

"When it comes to bedding down a rabbit, there are many options available to you. Sisal mats are great for offering a cozy location. You can add carpets, towels, a fleece blanket or fabric scraps to add extra comfort to the cage"

I advise you stay away from man made fabric items in cage. Your bunny can and will chew them. chewed up towels, fabric, blankets or whatever will shred and bunny can get threads wrapped around intestines and cut off the intestines leading to death. other things that can happen is bunnys intestine can get clogged up by all these fabric or carpet pieces it has swallowed and bunny will die of starvation since it cant vomit it up and cant pass it.

I put hay or straw in cages for warmth in cooler weather. I also like the foot relax floor inserts , they prevent and heal sore hocks and provide a nice sanitizable place for bunny to rest or sit. ( we sell them on our url).

Please be careful when it comes to exposing your bunny to things not found in bunnies natural environment. bunny proof in and out of cage.

I agree with you! The bigger the rabbit cage the better. Plus even if you have the biggest rabbit cage ever you should allow your rabbit to spend lots and lots of time out of his cage, I should know I've been raising rabbits for over 10 years as pets!
